Can't go to Hawaii without attending a luau

Last night we went to the Smith Family Luau. Their family has been on Kauai for 70 years. The grounds include many acres of beautiful gardens. The evening started with a lei greeting and then a tour around the gardens. The flowers are so abundant and colorful in Kauai. I was a little disappointed in the unkeptness of some of their displays, but for the most part it was beautiful. It was nice to have the trees described. Since landing I have noticed a very tall, extremely straight, lacy pine tree. The gardens here called it a Norfolk Pine. Wow, back home a Norfolk pine is a decorative house plant.

After the Imu ceremony (taking the kalua pig out of the underground oven pit) we enjoyed a fabulous buffet. The food was amazing so it was very easy to eat too much.

After dinner we walked to the amphitheater for the entertainment. The dancers took us through the dance cultures from the immigrating countries of Japan, Samoa, Tahiti, New Zealand and more. Of coarse the Samoan fire knife dance brought great cheers from the crowd.

All in all it was a fun evening. Just a few too many guests for my tastes but it was top notch hospitality and excellent extertainment.
