All day road trip to north end - literally the end of the road.

We had a "down" day so we went on an all day road trip to the north shore.  Our first stop brought back memories of our honeymoon and staying in a lighthouse on the SW shore of PEI.  The Kilauea Lighthouse is located at the northern most tip of the main Hawaiian Islands.  It is also home to the Kilauea National Wildlife Refuge.

Continuing our road trip, we saw a sign for fresh leis.  We stopped and chatted with an old man and purchased a fresh Puakenikeni lei.  It was amazingly fragrant.  You can also see in the picture how the residents of Kauai use bushes and trees to make a dense privacy fence to their homes.

There are so very many beaches on Kauai.  Due to the great number of beaches and the quiet time of year, most of the beaches only have a few people enjoying them.  This is Kilihiwai Bay Beach.  It was a pristine beach with gorgeous views and a relaxed slope of sand.  Of coarse we did find a few chickens enjoying their day on the beach.

The north shore is also known for their one lane bridges.  The etiquette for crossing is simple - 5-7 cars pass together and then the cars from the opposite direction pass.

Time for lunch.  Yelp guided us to Pat's Taqueria food truck in Hanalei by the beach.  Amazing fish tacos!!  We ate our tacos and watched a few experienced surfers and a few not so experienced.  This was our first crazy busy beach experience.

Farther up the road we stopped at Haena beach.  The waves crashing into the lava rocks were just mesmerizing.  Farther to the east was another quiet sandy easy sloped beach.

Caves!  We found caves.  This cave went back into the mountain farther than I could see. Very cool - well it was actually a little chilly.  Sorry about the humor.

At Haena Park we enjoyed a shave ice from a lone food truck.  They did not have ice-cream for our shave ice but he added sweet cream and it was delicious.

The waters up here were much rougher.  Signs were posted for dangerous shore break and rip tides.  We did see a couple boys attempt surfing at their own risk.  Lifeguards are posted at most beaches but apparently they do not stop crazy people.

Again we watched the waves crash into lava rock.  The bright white against the black rock was beautiful.  A couple arrived with a photographer and wedding officiant so we gave them their privacy and headed back down the beach.

Another interesting thing about Kauai is the lack of graffiti.  A couple days ago I did see a painted fence.  The thing they do have here is stickers.  Stickers on the front and back of street signs, stickers on any flat metal surface.  This is the metering panel at the facilities at Haena Park.  Crazy, huh?

Another cave.  There are so many signs around this part of Hawaii protecting the state from liability.  After a while I just stopped reading them.  See the sign in front of this cave.  I guess I should have read it.

Danger  Falling Rocks!  Leave this area immediately!  Oops.

We completed our day with dinner at Lemongrass.  Our appetizer was calamari fritters served with creamy wasabi aioli over greens.  Tim had the Wailua chicken served with light honey bureau blanc sauce, mushrooms, tomatoes and tangy capers.  I had the macadamia nut crusted sea bass with steamed Jasmine rice and fresh vegetables.  The sauce was a creamy chili sauce with a sweet citrus taste.  Amazing.
